Get ready for an exciting journey through time at the second annual Skellig Coast Archaeology Festival, taking place from October 18 to 20, 2024, in South Kerry. Organized by the Heritage Iveragh Committee and Comhchoiste Ghaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh, this three-day festival will offer a captivating exploration of Kerry’s archaeological heritage, with a special focus on the theme: “Agriculture in Kerry since the First Farmers.”

Nestled along the scenic Skellig Coast, the festival provides visitors with a unique opportunity to dive deep into the region’s farming history, connect with Ireland’s ancient past, and experience the natural beauty of locations like Castlecove, Ballinskelligs, Dromid, Portmagee, Valentia Island, and Cahersiveen. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a language lover, or someone who appreciates the great outdoors, this festival promises something for everyone.

Key Highlights of the Festival

The Skellig Coast Archaeology Festival 2024 will feature a variety of activities ranging from immersive hikes and archaeological workshops to captivating storytelling and stargazing sessions. Here’s what you can look forward to over the course of the weekend:

Day 1: Friday, October 18

The festival kicks off with a bilingual Irish language hike led by local farmer and language officer Séaghean Ó Suilleabháin, fondly known as “The Kerry Cowboy.” Starting in the uplands around Cahersiveen, this hike will introduce participants to the breathtaking Kerry landscape while exploring the Irish language in its natural setting.

Later in the afternoon, Daragh Smyth, author of Earthing the Myths, will host a fascinating talk on Irish mythology in the Cahersiveen Library, followed by a concert inspired by the legendary tale of An Táin, performed by Lorcán Mac Mathúna in the Ballinskelligs Community Hall.

Day 2: Saturday, October 19

Saturday’s events take place at Brú na Dromada, which serves as the festival hub. Kerry County Museum will present a mobile museum showcasing replica artifacts that provide visitors with a hands-on experience of Ireland’s ancient past.

In the morning, Dr. Eugene Costello from University College Cork (UCC) will lead a bilingual exploration of ancient farming practices in the upland pastures of Tuar an Chladáin, focusing on booleying, a traditional form of transhumance farming that shaped the landscape for centuries.

In the afternoon, families can enjoy a children’s archaeology workshop led by Áine Brosnan, while those interested in ancient art can participate in an experimental archaeology workshop focusing on rock art, led by Aoibheann Lambe and Helen Richmond.

The day ends on a celestial note with a stargazing session at 7:00 PM, followed by an archaeo-astrophotography workshop at 10:00 PM for those keen on capturing the night sky in stunning detail.

Day 3: Sunday, October 20

The final day begins with a guided walk on Valentia Island, led by Dr. Eoin O’Neill, Vice-chair of Heritage Iveragh. The island offers a rich tapestry of history, making it the perfect setting for this immersive exploration.

In the afternoon, Dr. Holger Lönze and Dr. Billy Mag Fhloinn will demonstrate Bronze Age casting techniques, bringing the ancient craft of metalworking to life. Later, festival-goers can visit Seán Ó Laoghaire’s farm, where storytelling and Irish folklore take center stage, offering an authentic taste of Kerry’s cultural traditions.

The festival wraps up with a tour of Patrick Murphy’s folk museum in Castlecove, a visit to a nearby rock art site, and a closing ceremony at the historic Staigue Fort House.
